Drugs, guns, cash and the involvement of the world's most famous porn star, John "Johnny Wadd" Holmes - the infamous 1981 murders on Hollywood's Wonderland Avenue had it all. Described by the LAPD as the most gruesome crime scene since the Manson family's Tate/LaBianca killings, the deaths of four drug dealers in an apartment in the Hollywood Hills was considered just another narcotics-related murder investigation. That was until the police discovered a connection linking the victims with washed up porn king Holmes and the notorious LA gangster and nightclub owner Adel Narallah, aka Eddie Nash.
The star of more than 2,000 hardcore porn films and rumoured to have had sex with over 14,000 women, the legendary John Holmes' (Val Kilmer) casual experimentation with drugs quickly led to full-on addiction and financial ruin. Although still married to his long-suffering but devoted wife, Sharon (Lisa Kudrow), Holmes began an affair with 15-year-old Dawn Schiller (Kate Bosworth), who became his constant companion as his life started to fall apart.
In the midst of his downward spiral, Holmes befriended a group of local drug dealers who were operating out of an apartment on Wonderland Avenue. Eager to get their hands on more cash and drugs, the gang used their connection with Holmes to plan a raid on another of Holmes' associates, Eddie Nash (Eric Bogosian). But shortly after the robbery, the bodies of four of the gang were found brutally slaughtered in the Wonderland apartment. The only survivor, Susan Launius (Christina Applegate), suffered severe head injuries rendering her unable to identify her attackers. The question was, who was really behind the murders? Well, that depends upon who is telling the story
Wonderland is a visually stylish, gritty thriller that pulls no punches in revealing the darkest depths to which people are driven when their lives spin out of control. Wonderland is released by Tartan and will be available to buy from 27th September 2004.
