Entertainment In Video is delighted to announce the 10th May 2004 retail DVD release for the wondrous Hairspray. Best known for such decidedly adult fare as Pink Flamingos and Mondo Trasho, cult director John Water's first PG-rated film, a winning combination of race relations and rock n' roll, is also his most sweet-natured and accessible. His affection for the era and attention to authenticity shines through every scene.
In her debut film appearance, Ricki Lake (some time before she went on to rule the chat show roost) radiates charm and Divine in his last role appears as both Tracy's mother, Edna, and dastardly TV station manager Arvin Hodgepile. As if that that little lot wasn't enough, an inspired cast of cameos (Pia Zadora, Sonny Bono, Debbie Harry and Waters himself) and some fabulous period choreography and music make for an irresistible confection.
Baltimore, 1962 and Tracy Turnblad (Ricki Lake) has the largest bouffant on the block. And despite her less than slim physique, she also has all the right moves to be on the local TV dance programme, The Corny Collins Show. Tracy's lively dance moves and bubbly personality win her legions of fans and she decides to use her new found popularity to help promote the cause of Baltimore's real outsiders: the black community that invented the rock and roll her generation loves.
