With a stellar cast including Claire Danes, Steve Martin and Jason Schwartzman, Shopgirl is an enchanting, poignant and entertaining look at the romantic choices we all face. Released to buy and rent on DVD on 22nd May 2006 from Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment, Shopgirl is based on the acclaimed novella by Steve Martin.
Mirabelle Buttersfield (Claire Danes; The Family Stone, The Hours, Romeo & Juliet) is a disenchanted salesgirl who works at Saks 5th Avenue behind the glove counter. As there is not much call for gloves in Los Angeles, Mirabelle spends most of her days leaning against the glass, waiting for her life to start. She's also an artist waiting to be discovered, and dreams of one day having her own exhibition.
Things begin to happen in Mirabelle's life with the near simultaneous arrival of two potential suitors. She meets the hopeless Jeremy (Jason Schwartzman; I Heart Huckabees, Spun, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy) at the local launderette. Meanwhile, sophisticated millionaire Ray Porter (Steve Martin; Cheaper by the Dozen, The Pink Panther, Father of the Bride) asks her to dinner after meeting her at the Saks counter.
Although they couldn't be more different, Mirabelle is interested in both men. Jeremy is spontaneous, eccentric and has a job as a 'font designer', which seems to involve spray painting his designs onto amplifiers. Despite having no money and no idea how to romance a girl, Jeremy somehow manages to charm Mirabelle. Ray is a logician who frequently travels for business via private jet. He whisks Mirabelle away from her lonely existence in a one-bedroom apartment, and into a life of expensive meals, fine wine and Armani ball gowns.
Although Jeremy is still in Mirabelle's life, she falls in love with the glamorous Ray, despite his inability to emotionally commit to her. As the relationship continues, Mirabelle comes to realise she and Ray may have very different expectations for their relationship. Mirabelle knows she must empower herself and make a choice about her future.
Directed by Anand Tucker (His Dark Materials, Hilary and Jackie), Shopgirl is insightful, witty and engaging, with outstanding performances from all the cast. Don't miss out on the chance to own this romantic dramedy on DVD!
