This fascinating series will be available on DVD from 2entertain on 9th August 2010.
From the 10th to 13th centuries, land across Europe was available for those brave enough to fight for it. One single province of France produced the men who took the most - the Normans. The effects of the unchecked ambition and extraordinary expansion of these people from Northern France can still be felt across Europe today.
Sweeping across borders and centuries, Professor Robert Bartlett journeys from the stormy shores of Great Britain to Jerusalem, via Sicily, explaining how and why this dynasty of dukes and warriors became conquerors and kings.
Professor Bartlett also goes on to discover the wider and long term impact of the Normans. He uncovers the adventures of the individuals who travelled south to the Mediterranean and on to fight in the crusades in the Middle East. These are the stories of Norman mercenaries and dukes, some of whom created Kingdoms in distant lands.
From the invasion of Britain in 1066, through to the violence of the campaigns waged to control the north of England and on to the Doomsday Book, this historical series gives a gripping and definitive account of Norman expansion.
