The real Big Brother is here. The brilliant yet chilling adaptation of George Orwell's famous social fiction book 1984, featuring a charismatic final performance from Richard Burton, is released on DVD by MGM Home Entertainment Limited from 20th September 2004.
Orwells terrifying vision, 1984, is brought to the screen with magnificent performances from an amazing cast line up. John Hurt plays the doomed would-be rebel Winston Smith, Richard Burton is magnificent in his role as malicious inner-party member O' Brien, and Suzanna Hamilton plays the character of innocent and promiscuous Julia.
After The Atomic War the world is divided into three states. London is the capital of Oceania, ruled by a party who has total control over all its citizens. Winston Smith (Hurt) is one of the bureaucrats, rewriting history in one of the departments. He lives in a world where there is no escape from the authority of the government who regiment the every thought and deed of their subjects.
Winston abides by this until he encounters Julia (Hamilton), a strange young women with rebellious ideas, to whom he develops a powerful attraction. But their passionate, forbidden relationship cannot escape the all-seeing eyes of Big Brother...
From the opening shot of 1984, the viewer is plunged right into the hellhole of Oceania and the ultimate nightmare, making this a phenomenal book-to-film translation. Whilst the year 1984 may be long past us, the essential themes of Orwell's best-known work still remain as timely and as relevant as ever making this essential viewing.
