Details

Look At Me (Comme Une Image), is the result of the second teaming up of writer-director Agnès Jaoui and her husband Jean-Pierre Bacri after the acclaimed Le Goût des autres. A comedy-drama masterpiece, Look At Me (Comme Une Image), is available to buy and rent on DVD on 21st March 2005 from Pathé Distribution Ltd.

Lolita (Marilou Berry, Ma vie est un enfer) is a desperately self-conscious twenty year old student. She is obsessed with her weight, and plagued by doubts of her ability to make it as a professional singer. None of this is helped by her tumultuous relationship with her father, the revered novelist and publisher Étienne Cassard (Jean-Pierre Bacri).

Convinced that people only pay her attention to get to her father, Lolita tumbles from one bad relationship to another and finds it difficult to trust others. She forms a close relationship with her singing teacher Sylvia (Agnès Jaoui herself) who finds tutoring the marginally talented Lolita torturous until she realises who her father is.

Sylvia’s husband is the self-deprecating author Pierre Millet (Laurent Grévill, Jack and Sarah) who is struggling to be recognised in literary circles, and who despairs about being supported by his wife. When Cassard contacts him after reading his latest book entitled Comme une image, Pierre will do almost anything to impress him, wanting to exchange his elderly publisher for Cassard’s backing.

All three characters desperately vie for Cassard’s approval, while he thoughtlessly ignores, and even taunts, their efforts. It is a character driven plot that is darkly humorous, sensitive and honest - there is something in it for everyone to identify with.

Look At Me (Comme Une Image), is full of sly wit, and handles the complex themes with clarity and subtlety, winning the award for Best Screenplay at the Cannes Film Festival last year.
