The Travis family's tranquil suburban existence is violently shattered by an incomprehensible tragedy. Teenage son Tim (Hirsch) is overwhelmed by feelings of inadequacy and views his life as a bad dream. His father, Ben (Daniels), shuts down, treating everyone close to him like strangers. His mother, Sandy (Weaver) seeks solace in caustic putdowns and pot smoking.

Only by confronting terrible truths about themselves can they put the past behind them and regain control of their future.
